Verizon 4G LTE live in Milwaukee and surrounding areas

When will Milwaukee get Verizon 4g LTE? I have been asking myself this question for god knows how long. If you have been following big red, you should know that the date was set for June 16th of 2011. For those of you hoping that there will not be any delays on the launch date, here is some good news, Verizon’s long awaited 4g is up and running in Milwaukee on 06/14/2011, two days ahead of schedule!

While at work today, one of my co-workers (Matt) was activating a Samsung Charge for a customer. After he lit up the new line of service for one of our wonderful customers, Matt noticed the 4g icon in the notification bar, and omg were we excited.

Now our store is in Menomonee Falls Wisconsin, a northern suburb of Milwaukee, while in our bunker of a store, we were picking up around 2 bars of service on the customers newly acquired device. Right away, with the agreement of our wonderful customer,we installed and made a few runs with speedtest.net. The first run gave us just above 8.5Mbps on the down side and right around 3.5 on the up side! The second run blessed us with a tad over 10Mbps down and just below 4 up! We gleefully sent the customer on his way to enjoy his fabulous 4g service.

So a whole 2 days ahead of schedule, Verizon has blessed southern Wisconsin with the highly desired service that Sprint has failed to deliver and only t-mobile’s hspa+ could somewhat fill for the time beign. T-Mo’s hspa+ is no slouch by any stretch of the imagination, but it literally only works in Milwaukee and its suburbs, and there is a huge market of consumers just out of the burbs and the smaller cities of Wisconsin. And when I say huge, I mean huge.

When it comes to broadband service just outside the greater Milwaukee, there are people still struggling with isp’s like netwurx, hughesnet and dsl and their blazing fast half megabit speeds. And in alot of cases, right across the street from neighbors that are getting Charter cable and Att Uverse. Its safe to say my store sells alot of 3g mifi cards.

When Verizon gets its LTE service out to the smaller cities like Slinger, Hartford, Jackson and West Bend, which looks to be the telecom to be the obvious first in these areas, Att is going to have a tough time getting in as Verizon saturates these markets with their 2 year contracts. For example, my father just moved into the area of Beaver Dam and picked himself up a US cellular 3g usb mbb stick which has been chugging along at 800Kbps and he is properly satisfied with those speeds. Yes, its also safe to say that he will be returning it within his first 30 days so I can light up a 4g mifi for him, even if he will only get 3g right away.

So back to our wonderful customer (a Slinger, Wi. resident) that picked up his Samsung Charge today. He told us that he will give us a call after he gets home and ran a few speed test to tell us the results. And also over the next couple of days. What a great guy! I am also going to take one of the mifi cards out this weekend and put it through its paces in multiple areas around these small cities north of Milwaukee, so keep checking back for updates or subscribe to my rss feed.

So to conclude this post for now. Milwaukee residents, congrats on gaining Americas most desirable 4g network. And for those of you residing just outside Milwaukee suburbs, hope for the best! I will be testing and posting the results in detail ass soon as I can get the time to do it.

Cheers!
